I rarely write a review on an EP or mini-album but I couldn’t help myself when it came to Australian singer-songwriter Erica Bronwyn.  Erica launched her debut Metamorphosis EP independently at this year’s Easterfest – the largest Christian music fest of its kind in Australia.  Her recent performance of this entire EP at a bimonthly live music event that I coordinate (live@thechapel) inspired me even more as I got to know the person behind the music, as well as the struggles she has had with relationship breakdown and her own mortality due to several debilitating conditions and sicknesses that she has experienced. Metamorphosis commences with the R&B song "Butterfly" which is the first single lifted from the EP.  The EP’s theme of metamorphosis is very clearly introduced with the following lyric from the song’s chorus:
"Here I am, wrapped up tight
My cocoon I will fight
Break away, see the light
All my might, I’ll take flight
Stretch out wide and fly high
Into the sky, butterfly, butterfly"

The film clip for this song is on her Youtube profile at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj6HQzRChhY "Hear me Calling" is a rockier spiritual warfare song that isn’t clichéd like some I’ve heard but actually comes out of Erica’s personal experience. "Another Day" is an uplifting pop song about chasing one’s dreams and making the most of the opportunities in life that come one’s way. "Look of Goodbye" and "Somewhere at Middle" both capture the pain of unrequited love.  The closing track "Try" is an incredible finale to a stunning EP as Erica describes the paralysing effects of chronic fatigue syndrome:
"Try to lift your head
Try to lift your legs
Try to grasp what strength is left
Another day, another struggle
Put on your strong face
Lord, help me through today

Chorus:
"‘Cause I cannot do it on my own
You’re the One who truly understands and knows
You know me inside and out
through all the ups and downs
You’re there to comfort me when I
feel like selling out."

You have with this EP a collection of inspiring, catchy, well-produced songs suitable for radio airplay that range in style from R&B to rock to intelligent pop. Some of Erica’s influences are Stacie Orrico and Alicia Keys but her vocal delivery is definitely on a par with any of those aforementioned artists.  Erica shares her Christian faith and worldview without sound preachy. What you get here is raw honesty and authenticity. Now that Erica has signed to Starlight Records, this EP and future releases will be available to fans not only in her home country but overseas as well.I am so looking forward to the release of her first long player.  Bring it on Erica!
