Episode Six - America Inside Out With Katie Couric
May 16, 2018
The Age of Outrage
The word “safe” can have several meanings. One can reference a money depository while another means freedom from injury. In the final episode of Katie Couric’s series, what is secure and free from harm comes to mean a place---on a campus, for example, and it can mean freedom from emotional abuse, too. With the multi-ethnicity of today’s society, getting along with your neighbor is a premium, and sometimes you would just like to be with “your own kind” for a while. Colleges that are visited are the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.
In this episode are the Safe Spaces on college campuses. As one person said, “we just can’t just sing folk tunes anymore” and hope all is OK. You must be aware of political correctness, too. For African Americans, for example there is what some call a Black House, where young people can go and relax and “not feel on edge all the time.” As one student puts it, “sometimes I feel as though I am lost in a sea of whiteness.” The Jewish students have the Hello House and can discuss the pressure the students there feel from their families to “succeed and be perfect.” Muslim students and other groups have the same emotions and feelings of “unrealistic expectations” from their families, and the students have similar places to go for relaxation. Not only do the Safe Spaces offer emotional comfort, it is a place of physical safety, too. When this writer was in college, the only safe place was in your dorm. Catholic students were fortunate then, as they had a Newman House to go to “to talk.”
Times have changed and will continue to change. The acknowledgement that to have a space to come and relax and talk “your talk” is a comfort. As one students said, “having a place to go (Safe Space) is like having an American Embassy nearby to go to.” Such is college today.
Production values are excellent.
