Years Of Living Dangerously Episode 4: Fueling The Fire Subtitles

Kansas May Become The New Florida

Hosts: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gisele Bundchen

Actor/past Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and model Gisele Bundchen investigate the effects of oil fuel and forest burning in the Amazon in this week’s episode. It is dangerous these days to be a news commentator. Schwarzenegger in the Middle East riding in a military oil convoy or Bundchen in a Brazil rainforest where Brazilian troops protect trees from deforestation and burning to clear the land for cattle raising. This is destroying an eco-system that replenishes the air with something that fouls the air.

Such is the theme of this episode that has two major stars with their own project. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger rides a bomb (as the oil truckers call it) to transport oil from one location to another, and all the while watching out for Isis attacks. On another part of Planet Earth, Gisele Bundchen observes the illegal clearing of rainforest for the raising of crops that feed cattle which is a prime product.  People must eat, but always beef?  Your burger comes from destroyed forests and 20% of the Amazon Rain Forest is already lost. One-fifth of the world’s fresh water is here and that is the size of the continental United States. Trees act as an air conditioner to soak up carbon dioxide produced here. Beef cattle take 20 times as much land as growing beans.

Meanwhile, Arnold Schwarzenegger goes from the convoy of trucks to Washington, D.C. and committee meetings about oil production and why U.S. military bases don't use solar panels for cooling.  The answer?  You guessed it. Held up in committees, and blocked by Congress. The people who speak out are retired military people.

A scenario was described whereby if the ocean levels rose two feet by the year 2050, the U.S. Eastern Seaboard would be non-existent. Hurricanes would devastate the area and though plans are made to build higher buildings, would that be enough by that time?  It makes one look askance at your favorite burger and decide to take an Eastern Seaboard vacation now before the water level rises. Kansas may become the new Florida in the future.
