tpt-90pxThe Crossing - August/September 2012

Hello once again. Welcome back to another installment of America's least known new music and movie release program.

It's also the best, which sets it apart from the other lists out there. How so, you ask? I'll make this quick. Who else has both Motorhead and Mark Knopfler in the same list? What seriously sets my list apart from other lists is that I cover a lot of classic artists from yesteryear as well as the new, while other lists just stick to the new. Sure I could just list Mumford & Sons, a great band mind you, but you know who used to be Mumford & Sons? The Who. Yes, The Who used to be Mumford & Sons. No, not in sound. And, certainly not recently. You would have to go back about 45+ years when The Who were the new kids on the block like Mumford & Sons are now. Mumford & Sons are about to release their second album 'Babel' in late September, after blowing everyone away with the release of their debut 'Sigh No More' two years ago. They are in ascendency and may, hopefully, go on to have a very long career. But will we be talking about them 45 years from now? Well, now, that's another question. In short, I like my list, I hope you do too. But, dang, if it isn't long. As usual, peruse carefully and try not to blink too often.

Also, be sure to check out The Crossing on Facebook. I send late night performances from artists you may be interested in or are curious about. It's a way of putting music and faces to the names you see in the list. I also send trailers for films and other goings-on, interesting articles, etc. To help keep up on what's going on in music and movies, you can find The Crossing on Facebook here:x

LYRICS of the MONTH:

In wondering what lyrics to post this month, I was listening to some Pierce Pettis albums lately and in acknowledgement of the recent 20th anniversary of the passing of the late, great Mark Heard, it suddenly dawned on me who the finalist for this month should be. Here’s a Mark Heard track of whom Pierce Pettis was so very fond of having begun his last six albums with a Mark Heard song. Did that make sense?

This song would seem to be about worrying a bit about the future. Something which seems ever so prevalent in these, let’s say ‘interesting’ times.

“Why do I lie awake at night and think back just as far as I can
To the sound of my father's laugh outdoors
To the thought of Sputnik in free-flight?

Before I could fashion my poverty
Before I distrusted the night
I must've known something
I must've known something
Those were the times I live for tonight

Why, why, why, I say Why, Mama, Why?
Why can't I sleep in peace tonight underneath the satellite sky?

It can't be easy for my children
I'm hollow before my time
It looks like a desert here to me
Where is the promise of youth for my child?

Where are the faraway kingdoms of dreams?
We've been to the moon and there's trouble at home
They vanished in the mist with Saint Nicholas
They lie scattered to the ghettos and the war zones

Why, Why, Why, I say Why, Mama, Why?
Why can't I sleep in peace tonight underneath the satellite sky

I want to stand out in the middle of the street and listen to the stars
I want to hear their sweet voices
I want to feel a big bang rattle my bones
I want to laugh for my children
I want the spark to ignite
before they find out what it means to be born
into these times

Why, Why, Why, I say Why, Mama, Why?
Why can't I sleep in peace tonight underneath the satellite sky?”

Mark Heard, the song “Satellite Sky” from the album Satellite Sky released in 1992.

Have a good Labor Day weekend.

See you in October.

Rock on…
