Fans of the “Minions” don’t have to wait longer; their favorites are back on the screen with a film that has sensitivity with laughter. Can this be, you say? Yes, it can, along with a well-thought-out script by director Pierre Coffin and writer Brian Lynch. There is enough story line to keep the attention of the audience, and new fans, who may not have seen a Minions film. The Minions came along with Dru, the villain. Minions, you see, like to be part of a villain’s crew, and think this is their fate. Minions turned into a success, having their own film eventually, and several Dru-the-villain-who-has-children movies. Now, the storyline takes one back in history to the background of Minions and this time, going into the motion picture business. Can outer space be next?
The film begins with a tour guide telling of the history of Minions. It seems as though there were two, one group who follow villains and do their work, and the other group with artistic tendencies This goes into one episode after another and ends with Henry and Ed. Minions are selected to be in a film, after stumbling onto a film set, but their language is not understood, and they are fired. Not to be daunted, the Minions come up with the idea of making their own movie including a metal monster named Dort, and Goomie, who arrived after someone used a spell book. Then, there is Eyereen (Irene) a blob monster (remember “The Blob” movie with Steve McQueen). And so, it goes.
As you can imagine, there is so much going on, the audience may need a notebook to keep track. All in all, this is a sly look at the motion picture industry and what is important at the moment and what is immediately dropped for another important moment and so on. The animation is spectacular by Illumination Company that has the films “The Secret Life of Pets” and “Sing” to its credit. In the viewing audience, this critic noticed many fans with Minion’s t-shirts and Minion’s tote bags. Halloween is also a Minions Special Occasion.
I was taken with the first Minion movie and had to see it twice. Partnering with the villain, Dru (voice of Steve Carell) and fighting other villains, became a trademark. The solo “Minions” film was a hit, especially the first 30 minutes with the history of the tribe from dinosaurs to now. A continuation into the movie industry was an intelligent stroke of writing. Understanding language is not difficult when there are many hand gestures and eye-rolls. Enjoy.
