The country of Greenland has been in the news lately. A small country that is holding its own against a political upheaval. In the first film, “Greenland” the country turned out to be the only safe place on the planet because of a comet hitting Earth. The theme of the film was escape and find a new place to live. Returning to “Greenland 2” is Gerard Butler (John Garrity) as an engineer and Morena Baccarin (Allison Garrity) as his wife. Their son is now Roman Griffin Davis who takes over from Roger Dale Floyd the idea is the same—escape.
The setting is now five years later and the Garrity family has survived by living in an underground bunker. Theis son is diabetic Outside, after the comet had hit the earth, is ice and wasteland. Earthquakes and electric storms prevail and the bunker is no longer safe, so the group begins to seek another place to live and this is where you hold on to the arm rest of your theater seat. They encounter a tsunami, earthquake, electrical storm, an English Channel is a dry water bed and on to Liverpool where they hope to find safety with a group of survivors there. In the meantime, John has been wounded they need help. There is military there, but who to trust? What to do? Is Earth really safe now or not? What has happened to Greenland?
Gerard Butler is a good action figure and carries the film on his shoulders. He is the leader and after his role in “Greenland 2” I am sure he will have another action ready by next year. In the meantime, he and Marena Baccarin (who has her own TV series now) are doing well. The rest of the cast do what they do in action films that supports the main characters. Cinematography by Martin Ahlgren gives us the breath of destruction a comet can do, and composer David Budkley’s music provides the momentum that ties it all together. Now we know what happens when a comet strikes the Earth, and that underground bunkers are safe unless there are earthquakes. Always have an escape plan handy and hope that over the next rise will be a safe place to begin again.
As for today’s Greenland, it is safe so far. Think of the Vikings who discovered it centuries ago and all they had were wooden boats and sails. What would they say now.
