Ancient
Christian Devotional: A Year of Weekly Readings, Lectionary Cycle C (Paperback)
Edited By Thomas Odem / Cindy Crosby Publisher: IVP Books Page: 298 This book of weekly readings and reflections combines excerpts from the writings of the early church fathers. There are fifty-two weeks of readings following the weekly lectionary - cycle C. Cycle C begins with the first Sunday in Advent, 2009. You can read through them in order or by thematic interest. With each reading you will also find a simple opening and closing prayer drawn from the prayers and hymns of the ancient church. This is a wonderful devotional. The collection of writings from the church fathers is invaluable but still very accessible. The devotional matches each reading from the Sunday lectionary with comments from the Church Fathers (and occasionally, Mothers). There are enough readings to make this a useful book of devotions for each day of the week. It follows closely to the Sunday mass lectionary used in the Roman Catholic Church and Anglican Church. Used with the Bible and any version of the "daily office" (as in the Book of Common Prayer or The New Century Psalter), this devotional can add value both to personal and public daily prayer. Why not try adding something new with your reading this year. The reading remain as relevant today as when they were originally written. Shari Lloyd
